I’m Denise, the voice behind Hey, It’s A Cakewalk (HIAC), a dessert and baking blog which features recipes and business lessons learned from more than 30 years as a nonprofessional baker and from opening my own award-winning bakery.
This blog is a place to share my life-long love of baking along with my own shortcuts and tips. I started collecting recipes and baking as a young adult and although I am not a professional baker, I have learned a lot through trial and error, a great deal of reading, and from other culinary professionals who generously share their amazing knowledge and talent.
In early 2009, I fulfilled a dream by opening Flour & Sun Bakery, a boutique bakery that offered cupcakes, bars, cookies, cakes, scones and cake pops. Owning a small business is an exhilarating and exhausting experience, but thankfully I never lost my passion for baking. In the summer of 2014, I sold the bakery to my baker and now happily work only 40 or 50 hours a week (see more about my day job, below) instead of 80. I was looking for a way to share my baking and business knowledge, which is how Hey, It’s A Cakewalk was born. One of the easiest ways to be a successful baker is to break down the recipe into make ahead steps which I will show you. With a little help, anyone can bake a birthday cake or cookies to share with the special people in their lives.
More about Denise
As a public relations/marketing professional, I currently work for a cultural arts nonprofit with a film and education mission. My colleagues benefit from my baking as I usually bring in my goodies to the office to share. There is always a collective groan (“what about my diet!”) and sighs of happiness (“yes, afternoon sweets”) when I drop off the latest treat on the kitchen table. I am a to-do list-loving, cookbook junkie with over 400 cookbooks that for the most part focus on baking. I love reading cookbooks and always have a stack next to my bed for perusing. It’s fascinating to learn the stories behind great recipes—a family tradition or happy accident. My recipes include longtime family favorites, original ideas, 20 year-old faded newspaper clippings, crazy culinary combinations collected from the internet and cookbooks.
In addition to baking, I am addicted to television (or should I say Netflix). A few of my can’t-miss programs are House of Cards, Supernatural, Law & Order, Walking Dead—my love of television has no bounds! I have a very long list of shows on my list, like Bloodline, Sherlock, The Fall, Broadchurch, among many others. I spend way too much time on YouTube looking up clips from 1970s Saturday morning shows. Have you seen the opening credits to Land of the Lost lately? Thankfully my parents indulged my appreciation for movies and always let me stay up late to catch B&W films on Channel 13 or via bad VHS copies. Now, it really works out well that I work at an art house cinema that screens over 400 films per year. Thank goodness for my TiVO since I have the ability to record every film that has Bette Davis, Cary Grant and Montgomery Clift.
Thanks for stopping by Hey, It’s A Cakewalk. Feel free to leave a comment or ask a question if you are so inclined. I would love to hear your story behind a recipe too. And, let me know if there is other good TV I am missing out on.
